This is the plot of a movie whose main character is a young man named Oskar Schell. He is young and gifted intellectually, but he is challenged by his difficulties in society. He loses his father, who likes to tell him riddles, but gains a grandfather figure. He seems to have autism, but the film never says whether he does or not. Most assume that the character did have autism.

The movie “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” tells the story of how a boy loses his father when the towers collapse, but regains himself afterward. The boy has some of the traits of autism, especially an aversion to loud noises and crowds, but it is never stated as a fact that he has the disorder. Because he seems to exhibit traits it has been roundly believed that he is supposed to have autism. Although the film’s makers never confirmed or denied it is left to the movie’s public to decide.
