Can an autistic child be suspended from school?

Ouch! This is a sensitive area. In most states, a “manifestation determination” hearing needs to be held before any major discipline, such as suspension, occurs. A committee has to determine whether or not the child’s disability, in this case autism, has an impact on the child’s behavior. For example, if the child is known to throw tantrums because his communication is limited, and happens to kick another child while having a tantrum, the committee would need to decide if the kicking was due to his disability. If there is a connection, then he cannot be suspended.

Can an autistic child become normal?
